When is Easter this year? Yes, that is right, Easter falls on March
31. Early some think, and if you are a student who is thinking about
the prospect of having to attend school the entire month of April, May and
part of June, this year's "early" Easter is not joyously welcomed.
However, it must be stressed that Easter is much more
than a week's Vacation. And, the weeks leading up to Easter are far
more than McDonald's Fishwiches on Fridays. The most solemn season of
our Catholic Tradition offers all of us a time to quietly contemplate,
publicly work.
Consider making March your month of service.
Locate your near-by food banks, shelters, and soup kitchens.
Stress to the council members the importance of selfless giving at this time
of the year. Activities surrounding the theme of service often give
your council an opportunity to build teamwork.
In his book, Servant Leadership,
author Robert Greenleaf writes, "Who is the servant leader?...Servant
leaders differ from other persons of goodwill because the act on what
they believe. Consequently, they "know experimentally" and there
is a sustaining spirit when they venture and risk... In the absence of solid
evidence of such initiatives, servant leaders may stand alone, largely
without the support of their culture, as a saving remnant of those who care
for both persons and institutions, and who are determined o make their
caring count - wherever they are involved. Their
leadership by example sustains trust." |

Raise money for a needy family or a charitable
organization by selling "Lily " Pins (corsages) to students and faculty
members. Get flowers donated by a local florist or buy in bulk at your
local flower wholesaler.
-
Help students with learning and reading disabilities.
You can make tape recordings of textbook assignments. Work with
teachers to get a list of assignments (reading a chapter from a history
book, for example). The assignments are recorded and made available to
those who need the assistance.
-
Have a Paper Drive! Collect paper products such as
tissue, paper towels, toilet paper, diapers, etc. Give them to a local
child crisis center. Inter-class competitions motivate students to
participate!
-
Sponsor an Easter-Egg-Hunt for a local children's home.
Organize committees to get candy donations, prize donations (certificates,
toys, pen/pencils, etc.) Use plastic eggs which can be used year after
year. If you can do it, rent a Bunny costume so that the children can
have a picture taken as a souvenir.
