The Vice President Does More Than WAIT!

"Spell" & Raise Money

Would a better name for the office of Vice President be the Commissioner of Doing Nothing?  Absolutely not!  The Vice President does serve in the absence of the President, conducting meetings and supervising the activities of the student councils.  S/he must know how to plan an agenda and conduct an efficient meeting.  The VP works wide by side with the President, always ready to step in at a moments notice and sharing the responsibilities of the Presidency whenever possible.
The Vice President can also be responsible for jobs unique to that particular office.  Many vice president serve as the Commissioner of Elections and are responsible for all school elections.  They must organize the election calendar, plan opportunities for the candidates to make themselves known to the voters, conduct school wide voter registration, prepare election ballots, prepare the polling place count the ballots and get qualified student and adults to help in the process.
Other Vice Presidents are solely responsible for the Class Representatives.  The hold meetings with the Class Representatives and see to it that they are prepared to report their individual classes. the Vice President instructs the Class Representatives on the best ways to solicit feedback from fellow classmates.  S/he reviews the information the Student Council wants relayed to each class.
Still ote4hr Vice Presidents organize students into a Service Club.  they survey the principal, teachers, staff and students to see what the needs are within the school community and identify which ones could be met by students.  Then, they publicize the jobs available and match students to the jobs that best suit their talents and time.
Many Vice Presidents take responsibility for a RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION PROGRAM, honoring a girl and/or boy of the month, giving awards to students for good citizenship, effort, improvement, outstanding performance in a particular subject, perfect attendance, excellent GPA's, etc.  They also see to it that the student council recognizes teacher sand staff, honoring them on their birthdays or showing appreciation with a small gift, certificate, note award or celebration.
The Vice President can be very busy.  It is really up to the initiative of the person who holds the office and his/her willingness to work hard.  This office hold many opportunities to practice leadership and make a difference in the lives of students and staff. If you have been elected Vice President don't just sit around waiting for the President to get sick so you can run a meeting or take his/her place at a school function.  Plan to "make good things happen" while you wait!

If you are looking for an easy but excellent way to raise funds for your Council or school things about holding a SPELL-A-THON.  Here's what you do.

1. Enlist the approval and support of your      moderator, principals and entire school faculty.

2. Ask the teachers of each grade to compose a list of 100 words their class could and should learn to spell.

3. Make enough copies of the appropriate spelling list for every student.

4. Prepare a Spelling Sponsor Sheet and attach it to the list of words.  It should look something like this:

Student's Name     Grade
Sponsor's Name

Amount of Money Per Word Correct

Number of Words Correct

Total Donation

Received

5. Pass out a list of spelling words and Spelling Sheet on Monday.  Instruct the students...
      a. to study for a test on the words Friday morning.
     b. to gather sponsors; write their names on the Spelling Sponsor Sheet and the amount of money they promised to pay for each word the student spells correctly on Friday.
     c. to bring their Spelling Sponsor Sheet to school on Friday.  It will be colle3cted before the test is given.

6. Be sure that every teacher has an aide to help them correct the spelling tests and attach them to the Spelling Sponsor Sheets with the correct number of words marked clearly in RED.

7. Return the Spelling Sponsor Sheet and test paper to each student Friday afternoon with instructions to visit their sponsors over the weekend and collect the money promised.

**Ask the students to put all money in an envelope along with their Spelling Sponsor Sheet and bring to class the following Monday or Tuesday.

8. Collect money and get out THANK YOU notes to all the teacher and others who helped make this project a huge success!

9. Award prizes to the student or class spelling the most words correct and brining in the most money if you have planned to do so.

Calculating very conservatively, let's say that every student in a class of 35 had 3 sponsors (a very small number) who promised $.5 a word and each of these students spelled 80 words correct.  That class would have earned $420.  If 8 classes in the school did equally well you would have earned $3360 with little confusion and almost no overhead expense.  Sound good?  Try it and let us know how you do.

Obituary of "Someone Else"

October's Quote

We were saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our council's most valuable members, "Someone Else."

"Someone's" passing created a vacancy that will be difficult to fill.  "Else" had been with us for many years.  "Someone" did far more than a normal person's share of work.

Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration was well as results.  They said, :Someone Else" can work with that group.

Whenever there was a job to do, a committee to chair or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone' lips: Let "Someone Else" do it.

"Someone Else" was a wonderful person - sometimes appearing superhuman - but a person can only do so much.  Here the truth known, everyone expected too much of "Someone Else."  Now "Someone Else" is gone!

We wonder what we are going to do!  "Someone Else" left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it?  Who is going to do the things "Someone Else" did?

When you have a chance to participate in your council, remember, we can't depend on "Someone Else" any more!

Go for it!
