TEAM BUILDING

A GREAT LEADER!

For a group to function effectively as a team, several important elements must be present:

1.  The group must have a reason for working together.

2.  Members of the group must be interdependent; they need each other's experiences. abilities and commitment in order to arrive at mutual goals.

3.  Group members must be committed to the idea that working together as a group leads to more effective decisions than working in isolation.

4.  The group must be accountable as a functioning unit within the larger organizational context, such as Student Councils, the class, or the school.

GOALS OF TEAM BUILDING

Major Goal: To improve the problem-solving ability among team members by working through issues which challenge them.

Sub-Goals:

  • A better understanding of each member's role in the total organization.

  • A better understanding of the team - its purpose and role in the total organization.

  • Increased communication among team members about issue that affect the efficiency of the group.

  • A greater supporting network among group members.

  • A clear understanding of group process.

  • More effective ways of working through problems - at both the task and interpersonal levels

  • The ability to use conflict in a positive, rather than destructive way.

  • Greater collaboration among team members and reduction of competition which is costly to the individual, group, and organization.

  • A sense of interdependence among group members.

  • Increased ability for the group to work with other groups.

If you hope to be somebody, be yourself -- constantly, and then make yourself to be the best somebody your potential will allow -- continually!  Don't accept anything but a genuine self and the self you are becoming!

A great leader views leadership as an opportunity for SERVICE...

A great leader recognizes that by accepting a leadership position, he has accepted the responsibility to be a servant of the group.  If you are the leader of an organization, it is not your organization; rather you are there group's servant.  Your job is not to tell people what to do.  Instead, your job is to help the group go where it needs to go.

A great leader is committed to WORKING HARD...

A great leader is not afraid to get her hands dirty and work alongside the rest of the members.  A great leader is not afraid of putting in long hours of hard work.  Remember, work as if everything depended on you.  If everyone adopted this principle, imagine how much your organization would accomplish.  Another important principle to remember is this: Don't ask others to do what you wouldn't want to do yourself.

A great leader believes in the WORTH OF EACH INDIVIDUAL and works to INVOLVE AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE...

A great leader works to involve as many people as possible -- and as many different people as possible.  Believing in the worth of every individual means recognizing that each person can make a contribution to he organization - whether it be ideas, a helping hand, or some encouraging praise.  Remember that everyone has the potential to be a leader!  By adopting this principle. you can work to bring out the best in each person.  And if a person senses genuine trust from you, he can have faith in himself to carry out all sorts of responsibilities.

A great leader servers as a POSITIVE ROLE MODEL...

A great leader's character and reputation are open to the scrutiny of all.  Therefore, a great leader strives to serve as a positive role model at all time.  Her responsibility to be a positive role model extends everywhere.  Her works, words, good deeds, and influences are constantly seen by others -- even when she's not aware of it.  So a great leader's behavior is always a model for someone who looks up to her.  You can think of role modeling as an obligation for leaders.

And finally...

A great leader ENJOYS leadership!
